PESACH SHENI - A SECOND PASSOVER
It was hard to decide whether to do this week’s Halacha Highlight on Lag B’Omer, which is next Friday, or on the lesser-known holiday coming this Monday. I decided on the lesser-known holiday – Pesach Sheni. Pesach Sheni occurs on the 14th of Iyar, one month after the 14th of Nisan, the day on which the Pesach sacrifice was brought in the desert and until the Temple was destroyed. Those who were unable to bring the Pesach sacrifice were given a second chance to do so, a month later. This second chance to fulfil the commandment appears in Bamidbar 9:6-14, “Any person who because they are impure or off on a long journey cannot offer a Pesach sacrifice on time, should offer it on the 14th day of the next month.” Related to this is a custom dating from the Middle Ages to eat a little matzah on Pesach Sheni. Also, we don’t say Tachanun (a part of davening left out on happy days) on Pesach Sheni. Rabbi Yaakov Emden, known as the Yaavetz (1697-1776), wrote, “it was revealed to me from heaven that the Israelites were given a second chance to bring the Pesach offering on the 14th of Iyar because it was the last day in the desert that they had matzah left over from Egypt.” The story goes that after finishing off the last bit of it on the 14th of Iyar, the Israelites complained to God, “what will we eat?” and it was on the 15th of Iyar, that the mahn (the edible substance provided from heaven during our travels in the desert), began to fall. This is another reason for the custom of eating matzah on Pesach Sheni.
