At R. Ovadia Yosef's funeral in 2013, he was escorted by 800,000 mourners -- 10% of the entire country's population. Other than founding and leading the powerful Shas political party, resuscitating Sephardic cultural and religious pride in Ashkenazi-led modern Israel, and serving as Chief Rabbi of Israel for ten years ... he was probably the single most learned Torah scholar of the entire post-Medieval period. Nicknamed with the honorific "Maran" (our great master), a term typically reserved only for author of the Shulchan Aruch, R. Ovadia Yosef had a similarly authoritative and groundbreaking effect on Halakhic thought and practice. Together, we will explore "Maran's" colorful and inspiring life story, get a taste of his mindblowingly knowledgable Torah writings, read some of his more groundbreaking Responsa, and also address the morally difficult pieces of some of his theology.
